First of all, this is a belated but sincere thank you to everyone who participated at the silent reading table during Banned Book Week. It's important that we keep reminding ourselves that we have such freedoms.
Next, we apologize if there was any confusion with the meeting date for this month. It was delayed a week so that we could work with NAHS to chalk up the courtyard adjacent to the 500 bldg with some art and poetry. So on the 22nd, we hope to see you there with your creativity and all the art skill you can muster.
Just another reminder of the point opportunities that are coming up:
Common Reader - the entirety of the November meeting does rely on the fact that you've read the Common Reader book and are able to discuss it at depth, so make sure you pick up a copy from the Media Center between now and then. It's a short, interesting read.
Reader's Rally Questions
NaNoWriMo
Trunk-or-Treat - We're still discussing this, so we'll keep you posted.
Because Ms. Powell cannot stay after school on Monday, our planned activities will be canceled. Thanks to those of you who made posters at the last meeting, though -- they look awesome. We'll put them to use in the future...
In the meantime, remember that you can make up the same number of points that you would have gotten for going to Punctuation Day if you come read a recreational book at our Banned Books Week "sit in" during lunch - 30 minutes will get you 10 points. Celebrate your right to read!
In case you weren't able to attend the meeting on September 10th, or even if you did, here are two great ways to earn some points this month.
1. Banned Book Week:
Monday, September 23rd through Friday, September 27th, NEHS will be celebrating Banned Book Week everyday in the cafeteria. Celebrate your FREEDOM TO READ! In the cafeteria, a table will be set up with posters about banned week. You can come to the table during your lunch and read anything (except for a textbook and a school study guide) for ten minutes. An officer will be at the table every lunch during this week to write down your name and make sure you participate for ten minutes that day. In order to get 10 points for celebrating Banned Book Week, you must come to the table three days that week for ten minutes each.
2. Punctuation Day:
Since Punctuation Day is September 24th, we will be having a meeting after school at 2:30 in Ms. Powell's Room on September 23rd. At the last meeting, NEHS members made some pretty awesome punctuation signs, so during the meeting on the 23rd, we will be hanging up the posters. Additionally, we will cover up and add punctuation to posters around the school. Sign-in will be at the end of the meeting. If you plan to attend, we need to have a head count, so if you did not sign the sign-up sheet at the September 10th meeting, please email Kara Jones ASAP!
Hey everyone, I don't know if anybody actually reads this, but the first meeting for this year's NEHS get-togethers is tomorrow. We hope it will be a great year! The meeting shouldn't go past 3:30, for anybody who happened to be wondering. Hope to see you guys there! And as a special gift, here are some waffles.
NEHS will be hosting its first Induction in a couple years! It will be in the Media Center between 2:30 and 3:00 on Tuesday, March 12. Bring a favorite quote! Attendance is mandatory for all members.
There will be a small point opportunity for those who would like it after the induction.
If you're a reading this and you're a sophomore who hasn't signed up yet/paid dues, go do those things NOW. We'll still be here when you get back.
Come in mind with some literary romantic couples for the meeting this Tuesday, February 12, 2:30 PM in Ms. Powell's classroom (119). You may bring food for extra points. Can't wait to see all of you there!
Please remember that we will be having our Induction on March 12, 2013 after school in the Media Center. Regardless of grade, attendance will be mandatory. It should not last longer than 3:30. More details to come at the meeting.
As a NEHS member, I am sure that your New Year's Resolutions started with: 1) Learn more (English) words. This month, we will be taking a look at words of all shapes and sizes, and testing the limits of what we can do with them.
Hooray for finally making it to December! Our final meeting of the semester will be held on Tuesday 11th, 2:30 PM in Ms. Powell's room. Please don't forget to bring (for points): 1. Book: wrapped, in good condition, and age appropriate 2. Board Games: make sure these are literary/word related 3. Food
Don't forget you can write an essay (prompt: http://www.nehs.us/nehs/student_awards/intellectual_freedom/index.shtml) to Ms. Powell to make up missing points. If you write it in time, you may even enter it into the National-Level English Honor Society competition (until Dec. 17).
Kudos to all the members that participated in NaNoWriMo, especially if you were able to reach 50,000 words. Don't forget to let one of the officers know how many words you finished with, so that we can give you points for them. :)
We will be celebrating the great detective Sherlock Holmes (original book series by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) with a little mystery of our own. Join us in Ms. Powell's room at 2:20 on Tuesday, November 13, and don't forget your deductive reasoning!
